1. Our commitment

 

The Africa-Irish Development Initiative (AIDI) is committed to protecting the privacy and rights of individuals in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Irish data protection law.

 

This statement explains, in simple terms, how we meet our responsibilities as a data controller.

 

2. Lawful, fair and transparent processing

 

We process personal data:

 

- Lawfully – we always have a valid legal basis (such as consent, contract, legal obligation or legitimate interests).  
- Fairly – we consider the impact on individuals and avoid using data in ways they would not reasonably expect.  
- Transparently – we explain clearly how we use personal data, mainly through our Privacy Policy and this statement.

 

3. Purpose limitation

 

We collect personal data for specific, clear and legitimate purposes, such as:

 

- Running our community and education programmes  
- Managing events, bookings and communications  
- Meeting our legal and reporting obligations  

 

We do not use personal data in ways that are incompatible with these purposes.

 

4. Data minimisation

 

We only collect the personal data we need to carry out our work. We aim to:

 

- Avoid collecting unnecessary information  
- Limit access to those who need it to do their role  

 

5. Accuracy

 

We take reasonable steps to keep personal data accurate and up to date. You can help by telling us if your details change.

 

6. Storage limitation

 

We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes we collected it for, and as required by law. When data is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.

 

7. Integrity and confidentiality (security)

 

We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to keep personal data secure, including:

 

- Secure systems and passwords  
- Limited access based on role  
- Awareness of data protection responsibilities among staff and volunteers  

 

8. Accountability

 

We are responsible for, and able to demonstrate, our compliance with GDPR. This includes:

 

- Keeping appropriate records of our processing activities  
- Reviewing our policies and practices regularly  
- Responding to data protection queries and requests  

 

9. Your rights

 

Under GDPR, individuals have rights over their personal data, including:

 

- Right of access  
- Right to rectification  
- Right to erasure (in certain circumstances)  
- Right to restrict processing  
- Right to data portability (in certain circumstances)  
- Right to object to certain types of processing
